What Is Dichroic Glass?
Each piece of dichroic glass used in the jewelry and accessories offered here is a unique, one of a kind original. We begin by hand cutting the various pieces of glass, using dichroic elements and opaque and transparent glass to achieve a multi-layered art piece. The pieces are then assembled and placed in the kiln to be fired. Once the pieces are fired to perfection, they are removed and cleaned, and are ready for you to enjoy.

Dichroic is defined as the property of having one or more colors, especially when viewed from different angles. Some interesting properties of dichroic glass are that the filter materials are all clear, have no color inherent in them, do not absorb visual light; and all of the light energy is either transmitted or reflected. The glass filters light by acting as a selective mirror. One color is reflected while the other color is transmitted. This is in contrast to a typical piece of colored glass where the light energy hitting the surface enters the glass and part of the spectrum is absorbed. The only light energy emitted from colored glass is the part of the spectrum that is not absorbed.

The dielectric coating that produces all of the interesting colors on a piece of dichroic glass consists of very thin layers of metal oxides, such as titanium, silicon, and magnesium. The stack of thin layers produces an interference filter that creates the varied and unique color characteristics that we see in dichroic glass pieces. The metal oxides are layered on the glass in a high temperature vacuum furnace, making the glass rather costly but worth it because the results are so spectacular.
